ABSTRACT This invention relates to an improvement in a process for the catalytic conversion of methanol to form methyl formate. Low operating pressures, e.g. from subatmospheric to 100 psig and a copper-chromite catalyst are used to achieve enhanced conversion and high selectivity to methyl formate. In a preferred feature, carbon monoxide is included in a proportion of 0.25-2 moles per mole of methanol with the end result being a substantially increased yield and selectivity to methyl formate.
