ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for producing an optically active base using a dicarboxylic hemiamide in which the racemic base or a salt thereof with an acid is reacted with an optically active hemiamide of an unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having the general formula Image wherein R1, R2 and R3 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, or halogen atom, a hydroxy group, a methyl group or a methoxy group or two of these radicals together represent a methylene-dioxy group, R4 represents hydrogen or a methyl group, the radicals R5, R6 and R7 represent, independently of each other, hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl groups and n is 0 or 1, or a metallic salt thereof and, when required after fractionation, at least one optically homogeneous salt fraction is divided into the corresponding optically active base and the hemiamide.
