A process for producing a p-hydroxyneophyl m-phenoxybenzyl ether represented by the general formula (II) (see fig. II) (X1 and X2 are independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom) by subjecting a corresponding p-alkoxyneophyl m-phenoxybenzyl ether represented by the general formula (I) (see fig. I) (R represents a lower alkyl group, and X1 and X2 have the same definitions as above) to ether cleavager in which process the ether cleavage reaction is effected in an aprotic polar solvent, using a lower alkoxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal or using a metal hdyroxide in the presence of a lower alcohol.

II) (X1 et X2 sont, indépendamment, un atome d'hydrogène ou un atome d'halogène) en soumettant un éther p-alkoxynéophyl m-phénoxybenzylique correspondant de formule générale (I) (voir fig. I) (R représente un groupe alkyle inférieur, et X1 et X2 ont la même définition que ci-dessus) à un « scindeur » d'éther, le scindage étant effectué dans un solvant polaire aprotique avec un alkoxyde inférieur de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux, ou un hydroxyde métallique en présence d'un alcool inférieur.
