A process for producing para-xylene by the selective methylation of toluene comprising contacting a reactant mixture comprising toluene, methanol and added water, with an oxide modified ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst in a flow reactor in conditions selected to limit coke formation on the catalyst and at a contact time, between reactant mixture and catalyst, of less than 1 second.

Ce procédé de production de para-xylène par méthylation sélective de toluène comprend la mise en contact d'un mélange de réactifs dont le toluène, le méthanol et de l'eau ajoutée, avec un catalyseur zéolithe de type ZSM modifié à l'oxyde dans un réacteur à écoulement dans des conditions sélectionnées pour limiter la formation de coke sur le catalyseur, pendant une durée de contact entre le mélange de réactifs et le catalyseur de moins d'une seconde.
