ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: This invention is concerned with a process for producing phthalide with good yields and without the obtention of by-products. This process essentially comprises reacting 3-chlorophthalide with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and in the presence of an HCl-acceptor.
