ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention describes processes for the production of lower sodium polysulfides, such as sodium disulfide, from higher sodium polysufides and sodium. To this end, one either converts a prepared molten sodium polysulfide with sodium in a stoichiometric ratio that corresponds to the desired product with vigourous agitation in a protective gas, or under the same conditions dopes the higher polysulfide and the sodium into a prepared molten polysulfide, either in alternation or simultaneously. In either case, the doping of the sodium is so adjusted that the reaction mixture remains stirrable, and is stirred until the desired composition of the product is obtained.
