ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Pyridine derivatives having a trifluoromethyl group in the .beta.-position thereof are produced by reacting .beta.-picoline with chlorine and hydrogen fluoride in the vapor phase at a high temp- erature for a short time. The reaction condition may be mild and the yield of the desired compound is increased by reacting them in the presence of a specific metal fluoride. The pyridine deriva- tives useful as starting materials for agricultural chemicals and medicines can be continuously obtained by a simple reaction at high yield.
