ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for produc- ing pure sodium polysulphides directly from the elements sodium and sulphur. For this purpose the sodium and the sulphur, under a protective gas, are dosed in a stoichiometric ratio corresponding to the desired polysulphide alternately into a melt of a polysulphide, while stirring vigorously, in portions measured such that on adding the sodium the reaction mixture remains in the state of a stirrable suspension and that on adding the sulphur the latter completely reacts to a polysul- phide having the desired or a higher sulphur content.
