ABSTRACT A process for the continuous production of synthesis gases based on carbon monoxide and hydrogen, by the autothermic gasification of solid fuels, water and oxygen in a reactor at a temperature in the range of 800-1700°C and at a pressure of 10-150 bar, characterized in that the finely divided solid fuel is moistened with 2-30% by weight water, thoroughly mixed, and degassed in a screw press having two parallel shafts, compressed to a pressure above that obtaining in the reactor; finally the gas-tight, moist fuel plugs, are fed into the reaction chamber of the reactor through a burner, brought to reaction by means of a gasification agent, and the resulting crude synthesis gas is drawn off from the reactor. The process permits the introduction of a solid fuel into a gasification reactor that is under high pressure by means of a screw press that does not require an additional abrading device.
