Abstract A thin glass film is produced by a sol-gel method comprising forming a hydrolyzable solution that contains a metal alkoxide, water, an alcohol and an acid, contacting the applied solution with an atmosphere containing ammonia to polycondensate the metal alkoxide, and heating it to form a thin glass film. The process enables thicker glass films to be formed on a substrate than has previously been possible.
