ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For the operation of material-test reactors fuels having lower degrees of enrichment with U-235 have recently been considered. For this purpose U3O8 powder, which has a crystal size of 40 to 90 µm and can be produced economically and in whose production as little secondary waste as possible and a product free from pores are obtained, is required. Therefore, uranium compounds of the oxidation stage +4 to +6 are annealed in an oxygen-containing atmosphere; at a tempera- ture above 1250°C the annealing process is carried out in an atmosphere containing more than 30% by volume of oxygen.
