The invention concerns the production of vinyl esters from butene oligomers, wherein the butene is oligomerized, the butene oligomers are separated from the oligomers, the butene oligomers are converted to carboxylic acids that are longer by one carbon atom and that the carboxylic acids thus obtained are converted to the corresponding vinyl esters. Butene oligomers are, in particular, di-, tri- and tetrabutenes. Furthermore, the invention concerns the use of the vinyl esters as softening agents or as comonomers in polymerization reactions.
