The production of aromatic tricarboxylic acids like trimellitic acid, is enhanced by conducting an improved catalytic liquid phase oxidation of a trimethyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, as pseudocumene, continuously in at least three stages of reaction in series. The use as promoter of a ketone or an aldehyde at the first stage of reaction and of bromine at the following stages, in combination with the use of oxygen as oxidizing medium, allows to reduce substantially the global consumption of metal catalysts (Co, Mn, Zr, Ce) and to achieve high values of conversion and of selectivity.
L'invention concerne l'amélioration de la production d'acides tricarboxyliques aromatiques, tels que l'acide trimellitique, par oxydation en phase liquide catalytique améliorée d'un hydrocarbure aromatique substitué par un triméthyle, tel que le pseudocumène, dans un procédé en continu comprenant au moins trois phases de réaction en série. L'utilisation d'un promoteur d'une cétone ou d'un aldéhyde dans la première phase de réaction et de brome dans les phases suivantes, combinée à l'utilisation d'oxygène comme milieu d'oxydation, permet de réduire sensiblement la consommation globale de catalyseurs de métal (Co, Mn, Zr, Ce) et d'obtenir de hautes valeurs de conversion et de sélectivité.
