ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention contemplates fluidizing mineral concentrates with excess oxidizing gas in a fluid bed reactor while providing a reducing environment above the fluid bed, for example, by introducing a carbonaceous reductant above the bed so that the total amount of SO3 present is effectively reduced thereby minimizing recombination of sulfur with the calcine concentrate.
