ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing a rigid polyurethane foam for use as an energy-absorbing material is modified in that an organosilicone oil and silica are added to the usual ingredients. The foam produced from the modified composition has substantially larger bubbles than conventional foams. The product produced has greater capacity for absorption of kinetic energy due to the fact that crushing of the foam occurs at a constant load which can be controlled so that the load approaches but does not exceed that which an individual subjected to an impact can tolerate. In addition, the curve of load vs. displacement for such modified foams exhibits a longer plateau than is obtained with conventional rigid polyurethane foams, the combination of maximum dis- placement and maximum tolerable load providing maximum energy absorption and thus, maximum protection, especially for individuals riding in automobiles.
