ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aluminum or aluminum alloy is first anodized to form an oxide film thereon. For sealing the pores in this oxide film, the anodized basis metal is immersed in an aqueous solution of a phosphorus compound having a temperature of at least about 80°C. The sealed oxide film can be coated by the method of either electrophoretic, electrostatic or dip coating, and the coating can be dried at temperatures over 140°C without developing cracks in the oxide film.
