Process for purifying an .alpha.-keto ester by removing secondary and tertiary alcohols from the .alpha.-keto ester. In a first step, the .alpha.-keto ester to be purified is treated with a carboxylic anhydride and an acid, which is essentially insoluble under the filtration conditions, to esterify the secondary and tertiary alcohols. Subsequent filtration to remove the acid followed by distillation affords the desired purified .alpha.-keto ester.

Linvention concerne un procédé pour la purification dun a-cétoester par élimination dalcools secondaires et tertiaires de la-cétoester. Dans une première étape, la-cétoester devant être purifié est traité avec un anhydride carboxylique et un acide qui est essentiellement insoluble dans les conditions de filtration, pour estérifier les alcools secondaires et tertiaires. La filtration subséquente pour enlever lacide suivie par une distillation produit la-cétoester purifié souhaité.
