1,4-Butanediol is obtained by purifying crude 1,4-butanediol obtained by hydrolyzing diacetoxybutane via the following purification steps (1) to (3): (1) hydrogenating the crude 1,4-butanediol in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst; (2) removing a fine powder of the hydrogenating catalyst from the hydrogenation mixture; and (3) distilling the mixture, from which the fine powder has been removed, in a distillation column and thereby obtaining the 1,4-butanediol having high purity from a side stream thereof. The 1,4-butanediol thus obtained sustains high purity even in prolonged continuous operation of the process and is contaminated with little 2-(4'-hydroxybutoxy)tetrahydrofuran, and thus, it can be used as a starting material to produce polybutylene terephthalate with good colour.

Le 1,4-butanediol est obtenu en purifiant le 1,4-butanediol brut résultant de l'hydrolyse du diacétoxybutane, au moyen des trois étapes de purification suivantes : (1) le 1,4-butanediol brut est hydrogéné en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénation; (2) la fine poudre formée par le catalyseur d'hydrogénation est retirée du mélange hydrogéné; (3) le mélange d'où a été retiré cette fine poudre est distillé dans une colonne de distillation. Le 1,4-butanediol est prélevé par soutirage latéral de la colonne de distillation. Il est alors d'une très grande pureté, même en cas d'utilisation prolongée du dispositif ou de contamination par une petite quantité de 2-(4'-hydroxybutoxy)tétrahydrofurane. Le 1,4-butanediol ainsi obtenu peut donc servir de matière première pour la production de polybutylènetéréphtalate de couleur acceptable.
