ABSTRACT A process for the purification of sewage in a multistage activated sludge process, particularly a two-stage process, in which the first activation stage is operated as an adsorption stags with a sludge loading of at least 2 kg BOD5 per kilogram dry substance per day, either aerobically or facultativaly anaerobically. The biozonoses of the first activation stage and subsequent activation stages are separated. The first stage is operated with procaryotae (protocytes, intestinal bacteria) as the working biomass. It is stabilised against pH shock, salt shock and toxic shock by the introducton of a supplemental biomass of procaryotae contained in the raw sewage, comprising per unit volume at least 1%-wt of the weight per unit volume of the biomass already present as the working biomass in the first stage.
