ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Tryptophan and tryptophan derivatives are purified by treating them in an inert solvent at temperatures between approximately 20°C and the boiling temperature of the mixture with a salt of dithionous acid. Mixtures of water and a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid are preferred as solvents. Sodium dithionite is preferred as the salt of dithionous acid. A single treatment usually results in a pure product having a satisfac- tory colour.
