ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a process for purifying phenol- and phenol-formaldehyde containing waste water with chlorine dioxide, comprising treating the waste water with alkali or alkaline earth chlorites in the presence of formaldehyde, the ratio by weight of formaldehyde to phenol lying between 0.5 and 2:1, and the molar ratio of the sum of phenol and formalde- hyde to chlorite being between 1:1.2 and 1:2.
