ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a process for the "dry" methanisation of a gas mixture of an oxide of carbon and hydrogen at elevated temperature in which the catalyst comprises an inert support which is a metal oxide free from acid functions and which contains up to 30% by weight of nickel oxide, said support having been calcined at a temperature of at least 1,000°C. The use of such a catalyst enables avoidance of the use of exceeding 0.3 parts by volume per part by volume of steam without reducing the catalytic activity.
