ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus are described for reacting H2S with oxygen, for removing the H2S from an acid gas. The H2S, either alone or mixed with other gases, is continuously introduced, along with oxygen or a gas mixture containing oxygen, into a reactor which contains a bed of catalyst through which the oxygen gas and H2S pass and which causes the oxygen to react with the H2S. All of the catalyst is maintained soaked with liquid sulphur, and the temperature is maintained between 250 and 550°C. The pressure within the reactor is preferably greater than 5 atmospheres absolute. The process can also be operated in the absence of a catalyst, and with liquid sulphur present to promote the reaction.
