A row vector (ZV) is generated from at least one areal segment for recognizing and/or testing securities, the components of which in any given case represent an overall value taking into account all scanning results of a column of the segment (2.1, 2.2). In order for the recognition to take place largely independently of position, it is first determined in which of several specified angle areas the angle setting of the security lies. A reference pattern allocated to the angle area selected is used for the pattern comparison.
