A method of recovering oil from an oil well and treating produced water. An oil/water mixture is recovered from the well; oil is separated from the oil/water mixture producting an oil product and the produced water. A crystallizing reagent is mixed with the produced water, solids precipitated from the produced water, and crystals formed in the produced water. The pH of the produced water is adjusted to approximately 9.5 to approximately 11.2. After mixing the reagent with the produced water, the produced water is directed to a downstream ceramic membrane where it is filtered and a ceramic membrane reject stream and a ceramic membrane permeate stream are produced. After filtering the produced water in the membrane, the ceramic membrane permeate stream is directed to a reverse osmosis unit downstream from the membrane where it is filtered to produce a reverse osmosis permeate stream and a reverse osmosis reject stream.
