A process for recovering iron from an iron oxide bearing mass. The process includes forming a bed (27) of lump coke (28) in a vertical shaft furnace (11), feeding the iron oxide bearing mass and scrap metal onto the bed (27) of lump coke (28) and combusting the coke (28) in the coke bed (27) while injecting a plasma gas having a temperature greater than about 5,000 ~F into the coke bed to form a reaction zone (33) within the coke bed (27) having a temperature in excess of 4,000 ~F. The iron oxide bearing mass and scrap metal fed onto the bed (27) of lump coke (28) is molten to form a molten phase containing molten iron oxide and molten scrap metal. The molten phase flows into the reaction zone and a film is formed on the lump coke within the reaction zone, the iron oxide in the film being reduced by carbon from the coke to form molten iron (22) in a solid/liquid reduction. The molten iron (22) is discharged from the furnace (11).

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de récupération du fer à partir d'une matière contenant de l'oxyde de fer. Le procédé consiste à former un lit (27) de coke solide (28) dans un fourneau (11) à cuve verticale, amener la matière contenant l'oxyde de fer et mettre le métal au rebut sur le lit (27) de coke solide (28) et brûler le coke (28) dans le lit (27) tout en injectant un gaz plasma, dont la température est supérieure à environ 5000 ·F, dans le lit de coke afin de créer une zone (33) de réaction dans le lit (27) de coke dont la température est supérieure à 4000 ·F. La matière contenant l'oxyde de fer et le métal rebuté amené sur le lit (27) de coke solide (28) sont fondus afin d'obtenir une phase fondue contenant l'oxyde de fer fondu et le métal rebuté fondu. La phase fondue s'écoule dans la zone de réaction et un film se forme sur le coke solide dans la zone de réaction, l'oxyde de fer du film étant réduit par le carbone issu du coke et devenant du fer fondu (22) dans une réduction solide/liquide. Le fer fondu est ensuite évacué du four (11).
