ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention involves a process for recovering upgraded hydrocarbon products from a carbonaceous material selected from the class consisting of tar sands solids, coal solids, and a hydrocarbon fraction by contacting the carbonaceous material with a dense-water-containing fluid at a temperature in the range of from about 600°F. to about 900°F. for tar sands or coal, or 705°F. to 900°F. for hydrocarbon fractions; in the absence of an externally supplied catalyst and hydrogen.
