ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention involves a process for recovering upgraded hydro- carbon products from a carbonaceous material selected from the class consisting of oil shale solids, tar sands solids, coal solids and a hydrocarbon fraction by contacting the carbonaceous material with a dense-water-containing fluid at a temperature in the range of from about 600°F. to about 900°F. in the absence of supplied hydrogen and in the presence of a sulfur- and nitrogen-resistant catalyst.
