ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to an improved process for the recovery of zinc contained in the ferrites produced by roasting zinc concentrates and/or complex concentrates con- taining zinc. Zinc ferrite containing residues are treated in at least one stage with sulphuric acid solution to dissolve the zinc, iron and other acid soluble metals contained in the residues. The dissolved iron is removed from the solution by first ensuring that all iron in solution is oxidized to the ferric form and by precipitating the ferric iron in the pre- sence of neutral ions (NH4+, Na+, K+, Li+ or H3O) as a complex basic sulphate (jarosite) at a temperature in the range of 50°C. to the boiling temperature of the solution under a broad range (10-100 g.p.l. H2SO4) of relatively strong acidic con- ditions.
