2105586 9215713 PCTABS00016 A process for recovery of metal from a feedstock comprising a metal selected from the group comprising gold, platinum, silver, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, antimony, molybdenum, chromium, mercury, manganese, tin, other members of the platinum series and combinations thereof is provided. The process comprises the steps of: (a) contacting the feedstock with an aqueous mixture comprising ammonium nitrate having a concentration greater than about 1.5 M and sulphuric acid having a concentration greater than about 6 M at a temperature of at least about 105 ·C, to produce an insoluble residue and a leachate comprising the metal dissolved therein; (b) separating the residue from the leachate; and (c) recovering the metal from the leachate. The process is particularly advantageous for the recovery of gold and other precious metals, in addition to being useful to recover copper.
