An H2SO4/H2O2 mixture that dissolves in particular the AB5 type hydrogen storage alloys that form the main component of negative electrodes without leaving any residues is suitable to disintegrate the fine fraction containing the positive and negative electrode active material mechanically separated from scrap accumulators. Excess H2O2 is then destroyed and Fe3+ is reduced into Fe2+ by flowing the strongly acid disintegration solution over the metallic coarse fraction, so that the rare earths from the storage alloys may be precipitated as double sulphates without Fe impurities. Ni and Co may be recovered together by solvent extraction and simultaneous electrolysis. The separated product may be used as pre-alloy for producing new hydrogen storage alloys. The process may be carried out without problems even when because of sorting errors the scrap accumulators contain a small proportion of Ni/Cd batteries.

Un mélange de H¿2?SO¿4?/H¿2?O¿2? qui dissout sans laisser de résidus les alliages de stockage d'hydrogène de type AB¿5?, principaux éléments constitutifs des électrodes négatives, sert à désintégrer la partie fine mécaniquement séparée d'accumulateurs mis à la ferraille et qui est constituée du matériau actif des électrodes positives et négatives. En faisant s'écouler la solution de désintégration fortement acide sur la partie métallique grossière, on détruit l'excès de H¿2?O¿2? et on réduit tout Fe?3+¿ présent en Fe?2+¿, ce qui permet de précipiter les terres rares contenues dans les alliages de stockage sous forme de sulfates doubles exempts d'impuretés en Fe. On peut récupérer ensemble le Ni et le Co par extraction dans un solvant et électrolyse simultanée et utiliser le produit ainsi obtenu comme préalliage pour produire de nouveaux alliages de stockage d'hydrogène. La mise en oeuvre du processus n'est pas gênée même si, à cause d'erreurs de triage, les accumulateurs mis à la ferraille contiennent des proportions minimes de batteries en Ni/Cd.
