ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of reducing ohlorate in an admixture containing aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and chlorate, which method comprises contacting said mixture with hydrogen at a temperature above 100°C and elevated pressure in the presence of a catalytic amount of a ruthenium catalyst.
