This invention relates to a process for reducing the level of pollutants in the exhaust of a diesel engine, comprising: operating said diesel engine using as the fuel a water-diesel fuel emulsion; and contacting the exhaust gas from said diesel engine with an oxidation catalyst. The oxidation catalyst may be in the form of a cellular monolith (10). The cellular monolith (10) may be a ceramic extrusion (12). The monolith (10) is in the form of a honeycomb structure having small, parallel channels (20) running axially through it. The channel walls are coated with an inorganic oxide washcoat (16) and the catalyst (18) is deposited on the washcoat (16). Thick washcoat deposits (22) are formed in the cell corners of the washcoat (16).

L'invention concerne un procédé pour réduire le niveau de polluants dans les gaz d'échappement d'un moteur diesel, comprenant les opérations suivantes: faire fonctionner le moteur diesel en utilisant comme carburant une émulsion eau-gazole; mettre en contact les gaz d'échappement dudit moteur diesel avec un catalyseur d'oxydation. Ce catalyseur d'oxydation peut avoir la forme d'un monolithe alvéolaire (10), qui peut être un produit extrudé céramique (12). Ce monolithe (10), en forme de nid d'abeilles, est constitué de petits canaux (20) parallèles le traversant dans le sens axial. La paroi de ces canaux est revêtue d'une couche (16) d'absorption à base d'oxyde anorganique, sur laquelle est déposé le catalyseur (18). Dans les angles des alvéoles, la couche (16) d'absorption est plus épaisse (22).
