48,094 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for regenerating a reducing gas mix- ture from spent top gas emitted from direct reduction furnaces for the production of sponge iron characterized by the steps of providing an arc heater having spaced electrodes and forming an arc chamber communicating with a gas reformation chamber, striking an electric arc in an axial gap between the electrodes, introducing an arc gas comprising a gaseous mixture of CO, CO2, H2, and H2O through the gap to provide an elongated arc stream extend- ing into the reformation chamber, and introducing into the arc heater a hydrocarbonaceous material to react with the arc gas to produce reformed gas.
