Disclosed is a process for reducing the friction resistance of a hydrophilic coated polymer surface of an article, which involves treating the coated surface with a complexing agent for a heavy metal ion. The article is typically a product for an industrial, biotechnical or medical purpose, or part of such product, whose surfaces have been treated by the process of the invention. The complexing agent is for example EDTA and NTA and the hydrophilic polymer surface has a coating, for example, of a polymer containing repeating units derived from a monomer of the formula: R-(A)a (I) in which R is a mono- or diolefinically unsaturated organic radical, A is COOH, OSO3H, SO3H, OPO(OH)2, PO(OH)2, OP(OH)2 or phenolic OH and a is 1 to 6.
