The process of the invention provides a method of adjusting the metals content, and particularly the iron content in diphenylmethane diisocyanate or polyisocyanate mixtures of the diphenylmethane diisocyanate series. This process requires the treatment of the diphenylmethane diisocyanate or the polyisocyanate mixtures with at least one microporous adsorbents having an internal surface area of at least 100 m2/g at temperatures of 20 to 200°C and pressures of 0.5 to 100 bar, and separation of the isocyanate or mixtures thereof and the adsorbents to yield a diphenylmethane diisocyanate of polyisocyanate mixtures of the diphenylmethane diisocyanate series having a reduced iron content. The iron content can be reduced to a weight range of 1 to 100 mg Fe per kg of isocyanate by this process. In an optional embodiment, the diphenylmethane diisocyanate or polyisocyanate mixtures thereof is dissolved in an organic solvent prior to being treated with the microporous adsorbents.
