ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for reducing the ketene trimer portion in raw diketene by mixing the diketene with a compound of the general formula R(XH)n, in which R is hydrogen, an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 1 to 18 C atoms or an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, X is oxygen or sulfur, or XH together represents a COOH group, and n is 1 or 2, such as water, an alcohol, a phenol or a carboxylic acid, heating the mixture to a temperature of from 50° to 130°C, and then distilling off the diketene.
