According to the invention, the procedure offers a solution to the problem of controlling the temperature in electrolytic cells independently. The procedure consists in modifying the temperature in the cell by adjusting the setpoint resistance Ro in such a way that it is possible both to anticipate what the bath temperature should be and to make corrections after this temperature is reached. Anticipating bath temperature involves calculating and taking into account the values of known disturbances so that it is possible to compensate in advance for the impact of these disturbances on cell temperature. Making corrections after the fact (once the temperature has reached the anticipated level) consists in measuring the temperature within the bath at regular intervals, calculating a temperature mean, which is corrected to reflect periodic operating conditions, and compensating for temperature variations with reference to the setpoint temperature. The corrections are effected by the adjustment at regular intervals of an additional resistance value (positive or negative) which is added to the cell setpoint resistance Ro.
