Abstract of the disclosure: A process for the removal and recovery of mercury from mercury-containing waste water, particularly waste water produced by washing waste gases from incinerators, which comprises subjecting mercury-containing waste water to stripping treatment at a temperature not lower than 15°C in the presence of a reducing agent or a combination of oxidizing and reducing agents to obtain a gas mixture containing mercury vapor and cooling the gas mixture to separate the mercury therefrom as liquid metallic mercury.
