ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for removing sulfur dioxide from the flue gases of a furnace. In a way deviating from prior known processes, in addition to a sulfur-containing fuel and an oxygen-containing gas, a pulverous oxide or carbonate of calcium or magnesium is fed into the furnace in excess in proportion to the sulfur dioxide gas formed in the combustion chamber, and water is sprayed separately into the calcium oxide bearing or magnesium oxide bearing flue gases in a stage separate from the combustion chamber. Alternatively, the pulverous oxide can be fed directly into the flue gases leaving the furnace.
