Process for removing H2S from a gas stream comprising contacting the gas stream in first absorption zone (1) with a regenerable absorbent to obtain purified gas and an H2S-containing loaded absorbent, supplying the loaded absorbent to a regenerator (11) where the absorbent is regenerated producing an H2S-containing regenerator off-gas, supplying the regenerator off-gas to sulphur recovery plant (35) in which elemental sulphur is produced and in which a plant off-gas is formed containing SO2 and H2S, converting SO2 in the plant off-gas to H2S to obtain reduced plant off-gas, contacting reduced plant off-gas in second absorption zone (32) with regenerable absorbent to obtain a second purified gas and an H2S-containing semi-loaded absorbent, supplying the semi-loaded absorbent to the regenerator (11) where the absorbent is regenerated, wherein partly regenerated absorbent is removed from the regenerator (11) and is supplied to the first absorption zone (1), and wherein totally regenerated absorbent is removed from the regenerator (11) and is supplied to the second absorption zone (32).
