ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The process is intended to remove chlorinated organic compounds such as, for example, PCBs from very inaccessible components (core 3) of appliances which contain, like transformers, such compounds as oil fill- ing, in an inexpensive and nevertheless environmentally compatible manner. This is achieved by releasing the chlorine- containing compounds in the presence of a reactant which binds the chlorine in the form of an alkali chloride and/or alkaline earth chloride. The metallic components of the appliances are consequently accessible for a re- cycling process in an extremely environmentally compatible and economic manner. Fig. 1
