The ashes produced by the calcination of biosolids from waste water treatment contain significant amounts of coinage metals (Cu, Ag, Au) but are refractory to standard lixiviation either by cyanide or thiosulfate. A thermal treatment of the ashes by a reducer such as carbon, hydrogen or methane opens up the structure of the ashes and allows lixiviation with recovery of the coinage metals.
