A process is described for sealing a catheter tip to an insertion needle by use of a laser to ablate the end of a polymer catheter material and in the process of ablating the catheter material also provide a peal between the catheter material and a cannula placed therein. The sharpened cannula is present during the laser ablation process and residual polymer is sealed to the surface, thus preventing bland leakage between the cannula and the catheter tube.
