A process for the ex situ grinding and breaking apart of an agglomer- ating or agglomerated catalyst, or mixture of catalyst and a solids diluent, to maintain the fluidized characteristics of a bed wherein a low molecular weight hydrocarbon feed is converted to hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of steam and oxygen. Solids are withdrawn from the reactor, crushed and broken apart, and a solids fraction of selected particle size distribution is recycled to the reactor at rate sufficient to balance the intrinsic rate of agglomeration of solids particles forming within the fluidized bed of the reactor.
