The invention relates to the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated polymers, in particular elastomeric polymers which contain aromatic rings and carbon-carbon double rings, for example polymers prepared from styrene and butadiene. In this case, the polymer molecule contains internal and terminal-group double bonds, as well as unsaturated bonds in aromatic rings. According to the invention, only the unsaturated terminal and internal bonds are hydrogenated, whereby the thermal and weather resistance properties of the product are improved. Conventionally, hydrogenation has been performed by means of nickel or cobalt catalysts, but now it has been observed that a metallocene/alumoxane catalyst complex not only catalyzes the polymerization reaction of various olefinic compounds but also catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated polymers, preferably styrene-butadiene-styrene block polymers.

Hydrogénation sélective de polymères insaturés, en particulier de polymères élastomères renfermant des cycles aromatiques et des cycles doubles carbone-carbone, par exemple des polymères élaborés à partir de styrène et de butadiène. Dans ce cas, la molécule polymère contient des liaisons doubles internes et des groupes terminaux ainsi que des liaisons insaturées dans les cycles aromatiques. Selon cette invention, seules les liaisons terminales et internes insaturées sont hydrogénées, de sorte que les propriétés de résistance à la chaleur et aux intempéries du produit sont améliorées. Traditionnellement, l'hydrogénation s'effectue au moyen de catalyseurs au nickel ou au cobalt, mais il a été désormais constaté qu'un complexe catalyseur métallocène/alumoxane a pour effet non seulement de catalyser la réaction de polymérisation de divers composés d'oléfines mais aussi de catalyser l'hydrogénation sélective de polymères insaturés, de préférence de polymères séquencés styrène-butadiène-styrène.
