ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A finely-ground nickel-copper matte is leached using an acid at a minimum temperature of approx. 80°C and under oxidizing conditions in order to produce a nickel sulfate solution and a nickel-copper sulfide residue, which is separated from the solution and thereafter the nickel-copper sulfide residue is leached using acid in an autoclave at a minimum temperature of 110°C and under oxidizing conditions in order to produce an additional quantity of nickel sulfate solution and a copper sulfide precipitate.
