A process for the production of aryl 5-thio-.beta.-D- aldohexopyranoside derivatives represented by the general formula (|||) by reacting, according to the following scheme, a 5-thio-D-aldohexopyranose derivative of the general formula (|) with Ar-OH (||) in the presence of a phosphine represented by the general formula: PR11R12R13 and an azo reagent represented by the general formula: R21-N=N-R22.
