A process for selectively opening naphthenic rings of naphthenic ring- containing compounds in a feedstream wherein at least a portion of the ring compounds in the feedstream are characterized as containing at least one C5 ring having at least one substituent therefrom and wherein the number of carbon atoms for the C5 ring compound is at least 8. The C5 naphthenic rings are opened without significant dealkylation of any pendant substituents on the ring. The hydrocarbon feedstream, containing such compounds, is contacted with a catalyst comprised of an effective amount of a metal selected from Ir, Ru, and Rh and mixtures thereof on a catalyst support, which catalyst when reacted with a feed comprised of 20 wt.% n-pentylcyclopentane in heptane diluent will result in at least a 25 % yield of C10 paraffins and a selectivity to C10 paraffin products of at least 0.80, which selectivity is defined by %C10 paraffin yield/%C10 ring disappearance.

Procédé permettant d'ouvrir sélectivement des anneaux naphthéniques de composés contenant ces derniers qui sont présents dans un écoulement de départ dans lequel au moins une partie des composés cycliques se caractérise par le fait que lesdits composés cycliques contiennent au moins un anneau C5 comprenant au moins un substituant de ces derniers, le nombre d'atomes de carbone pour le composé cyclique C5 étant au moins égal à 8. Les anneaux naphthéniques C5 sont ouverts sans désalkylation significative d'un quelconque substituant pendant présent sur l'anneau. On met en contact l'écoulement d'hydrocarbure de départ qui contient lesdits composés avec un catalyseur constitué d'une quantité effective d'un métal sélectionné entre Ir, Ru, Rh et des mélanges de ces derniers déposés sur un support de catalyseur, puis on fait réagir ledit catalyseur avec une charge constituée de 20 % en poids de n-pentylcyclopentane dans un diluant heptane pour obtenir une production de paraffine C10 d'au moins 25 % et une sélectivité pour les produits de paraffine C10 d'au moins 0,80, ladite sélectivité étant définie de la manière suivante: pourcentage de production de paraffine C10/pourcentage d'élimination des anneaux C10.
