ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with a process for selectively stripping iron ions into an aqueous phase from an organic solvent containing iron and zinc ions and one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of alkyl phos- phoric acid, alkyl-aryl phosphoric acid, alkyl thio phosphoric acid, and alkyl-aryl thio phosphoric acid together with a petroleum hydrocarbon as a diluent for the organic solvent. The process of the invention comprises contacting the organic solvent with an aqueous solution containing NH4 + and F- ions to selectively strip the iron ions into the aqueous solution.
